INTERNATIONAL PEACE FLAME FROM BETHLEHEM
The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light; those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness, on them has light shone. Isaiah 6:2, quoted in Matthew 4:16
This flame originated in the Grotto of the Nativity in Bethlehem, Israel, the traditional place of Jesus’ birth. Lamps have burned continuously on that site for over 1000 years. A Boy Scout is chosen each year to take some of that ancient flame and transport it to Austria. From there, other scouts carry the flame to their own countries.
Early in December, the flame arrives in New York where one scout after another will carry it across the United States to congregations from coast to coast. Congregations who use this symbolic flame on Christmas Eve for their candlelight services join thousands of other congregations around the world using this same millennia old flame. It is a symbol of our unity and this flame represents the birth of the Prince of Peace.
In John 8:12, Jesus said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
Join us on December 22 at the Plaza in Old Towne Orange to see the flame for yourself! We'll meet at the Nativity scene in the middle of the Circle to hear the history of the Peace Flame. You'll have an opportunity to take the flame home with you so make sure to bring a lantern! We'll also sing carols around the Plaza. You won't want to miss this fun, family, friendly event!
